VI Systems and TU Berlin Win the Green Photonics Prize at Photonics West 2012

Energy-efficient VCSELs for 'Green' Data and Computer Communication wins the Green Photonics Prize for Pioneering contributions in the development of advanced technologies for energy-efficient light sources for data transmission.

At Photonics West on Tuesday 24 January, the SPIE Green Photonics awards were presented at the OPTO plenary session. EPIC members TU Berlin and VI-Systems collaborated on the best paper in the Communications Category for their presentation: Energy-efficient VCSELs for 'green' data and computer communication" by Philip Moser (Technische Univ. Berlin); James A. Lott (VI Systems GmbH); Philip Wolf, Gunter Larisch, Alexey Payusov, and Gerrit Fiol (Technische Univ. Berlin); Nikolay Ledentsov (VI Systems GmbH); and Werner Hofmann and Dieter Bimberg (Technische Univ. Berlin), for pioneering contributions in the development of advanced technologies for energy-efficient light sources for data transmission.

Epitaxial VCSEL material was grown according to the proprietary design and provided by VI Systems GmbH. High-frequency processing technology was developed and implemented at the TU Berlin, where also high-frequency characterization of the devices up to 40 Gb/s was carried out. As a result of the cooperation devices with similar performance directly produced by VI-Systems GmbH are now commercially available.
