EPIC World Photonics Technology Summit

The EPIC World Photonics Technology Summit is EPIC’s highest-level technology meeting. The event gathers experts and leaders from industrial companies around the world to discuss photonics technology developments, applications, and challenges.

The presentations are short, followed by a short discussion

moderated by Dr. Jose Pozo, EPIC’s Director of Technology, renowned for his exceptional ability to engage the audience to explore synergy and business opportunities. The event is very much networking oriented with many opportunities to meet the other participants.

EPIC Meeting on Photonics for Cancer Diagnostics and Treatment at NKI

The EPIC Meeting on Photonics for Cancer Diagnostics and Treatment at NKI was focused on making another step towards closure of the existing gap between unmet medical needs and innovative industrial solutions. The medical professionals discussed the existing requirements for cancer diagnostics and treatment of breast and prostate cancer. It is clear that there is a need for the paradigm shift from treatment towards preserving healthy state as well as avoiding overtreatment as much as overtreatment. Many medical fields could benefit from novel technologies, including pathology, radiology, dermatology, etc. Photonics has one of the best potentials to make a real change and during this meeting it was discussed how it can be achieved.

State-of-the-art technological advantages focusing on the minimal invasive diagnostic tools as well and interoperative tumor margin assessment such as Hyperspectral and Diffuse reflectance imaging, Raman spectroscopy, OCT, fluorescence imaging, etc. were discussed alongside with novel developments of various optical components and systems enabling the use of this technics on the real clinical setting.

EPIC Meeting on Wafer Level Optics at SUSS MicroOptics

Optical microtechnology is a booming field in different markets such as industrial, medical, automotive, consumer and mobile. This meeting is allowed the key players in wafer level microoptics to discuss the benefits and motivation of standards and potential collaborations to reinforce the industry and reduce fragmentation. The Companies attending this meeting covered the supply chain including end-users, fabrication techniques, materials and metrology. Different applications were discussed such as CMOS image sensors, automotive, lighting, AR/VR headsets, datacom, consumer electronics etc.

EPIC Meeting on LIDAR Technologies for Automotive at Anteryon

The LiDAR demands in terms of size, price and reliability by the automotive industry, require new developments in photonics. The vision of the automotive industry is to place LIDARs in headlights and taillights, bumpers, roof, and other places in the car, at low cost, high durability, low maintenance, high stability, each of these locations with different required specifications.

The EPIC Meeting on LiDAR for Automotive brought together the full supply chain to discuss the unmet needs from TIER1 suppliers and OEMs, and the needs for new photonics developments, such as wafer-level and freeform optics, high power laser diodes, integrated photonics, assembly processes.

EPIC Meeting on VCSELs Technology and Applications at SONY

Due to their stability, small size, temperature stability, simplicity and low cost of manufacturing and testing, VCSELs are becoming the dominant light source technology in volume applications. With the arrival of VCSELs to consumer markets the new era of semiconductor laser applications has arrived: we can find now VCSELs in smartphones, laptops, drones, robots, and cars enabling new functionalities such as: proximity sensing; high resolution (4K or Retina resolutions), fast frame-rate, and 3D video; remote powering of sensors optically (while simultaneously transmitting data); LIDAR, illumination, night vision, aerospace, and line-of-sight communication links, using high power VCSELs arrays; chip scale atomic clocks (CSAC); indoor positioning systems; and many more.

The EPIC Meeting on VCSELs Technology and Applications brought together companies driving the abovementioned applications together with the full value chain of VCSELs including: OEMs, integrators, device manufacturers, epi houses, foundries, equipment and material suppliers.

EPIC Meeting on High Power Laser Systems at PBF

The EPIC Meeting on High Power Laser System brought together the main drivers of laser applications that require kW+ power or high fluence in an optical beam.

The focus of this meeting was to address the challenges and high demands of the system and find suitable innovative solutions, considering the applications that are driving this market. The main topics addressed include: beam shaping, beam propagation and profiling; system cooling, head distribution, power dissipation, etc.

Challenges of the power supply and power electronics such as current ripple, dimming, pulse width modulation (PWM) interfacing, pulse reproducibility and stability were addressed. The system integrators shared their view on the current technology and customer demands, while the companies in charge of the manufacturing laser pumps, diodes, fibers, laser head and other components presented their state-of-the-art technology.

The EPIC Webinar on Hyperspectral Imaging insights on the hyperspectral imaging hardware and its use in all application fields: from the ground using microscopes and spectrometers to airborne or satellite sensors, up to astrophysical data.

The discussion focused on the application demands mainly in industrial inspection and machine vision, as well as in others enabled markets such as automotive, avionics, monitoring of the environment, pollution, precision agriculture, chemistry, biomedical imagery, defense application, space.

EPIC Meeting on New Space at ESA

The EPIC Meeting on New Space brought together a set of companies to cover some of the key priorities for the “New Space” road map. The purpose of the so called “New Space” trend, is to bring to the Space market mature or established technologies that either compete with or complement existing commercial space services.

The ESA priorities covered at the EPIC meeting were: new solutions for miniaturized and low cost LIDAR, RADAR; new concepts for optical network architectures in space; solutions for ultra-low power highly efficient and miniaturized datacom transceivers (using Photonic Integrated Circuits, plasmonics); the use of novel cameras and sensors for remote gas analysis as well as environmental monitoring; and last but not least, new concepts for atomic clocks for both timing and navigation, as well as new quantum technologies and applications.
